Oil Paintings & Layered Butter

A collection of my oil paintings featured in the limited print magazine Layered Butter. The project highlights how oil painting helps keep me creative and the skills needed to create these paintings.

The Process

I begin by sketching the design out as accurately as I can before laying the paint.

While it goes against the typical advice of painting in layers, I prefer to apply paint directly to the canvas in the right areas during my initial visit to each section, except for finer details like hair where I want to avoid mixing colours. I approach painting as constructing shapes rather than concentrating on the overall form. When on a specific section, I often ignore the rest of the painting, treating it as if I'm piecing together chunks of pixels that ultimately create the complete artwork.

I primarily use Sennelier oil paints, made with refined safflower oil, resulting in an exceptionally smooth texture. When I require a more vibrant color to truly stand out, I opt for Michael Harding paints due to their high pigment.

Layered Butter Feature

Layered Butter is a Canadian magazine that celebrates film, with each issue highlighting a different iconic director. Every edition includes more than 100 pages of curated content, printed on premium quality paper.

In their inaugural edition centered on the works of Christopher Nolan, they reached out to me to see if I could showcase my piece 'Cooper', which is inspired by his film 'Interstellar'.

This was my third painting since I started this hobby, and I can’t express how thrilled I am to be included in the launch of this great magazine. I began painting by merging my love for film with art, so being recognized for this is truly special.
